The Seatown · The Jungle · The Numberless Caverns

When her adopted parents leave on an Arctic Vacation, nine-year-old Piper is left in charge of the rice farm, the sheep herd, the spotted cow, and her hammock-lounging Grandfathers. But then a Shadow appears in the field, devouring the rice and even some of the sheep! Armed with an Asparagus Knife and equipped with Cardboard Sandals and a Broken Lantern, Piper sets out into Seatown in search of the rumored-to-be-dead Witch Cocoyam, who might be the only one capable of taming the Shadow. But the Shadow isn’t Piper’s only problem—Fugitive IX and his Tattooed Men have begun kidnapping foundlings, and the Tattooed Men have recently been sighted near Seatown. Hunted by the Tattooed Men, haunted by a Ghostcat, and almost always in her barefeet, Piper only has one week to save the rice farm from the Shadow before her adopted parents return.
